Introduction to A Level Biology

Our A Level Biology programme at Sandy Secondary School is designed to inspire and challenge students who have a passion for understanding life at every scale, from cellular mechanisms to entire ecosystems. Building upon GCSE foundations, this course offers an enriched exploration of biological concepts, combining rigorous academic study with practical laboratory experience.

Students undertake a comprehensive two-year programme under the AQA examination board (Specification A level 7402), progressing through interconnected modules that reveal the complexity and beauty of biological systems. Our teaching staff combine traditional scientific rigour with innovative pedagogical approaches, ensuring that abstract concepts become tangible and relevant to students' lives and future aspirations.

Throughout the course, students develop not only subject knowledge but also critical thinking, analytical skills, and an appreciation for scientific methodology. Whether students aspire to careers in medicine, environmental science, or beyond, A Level Biology provides the solid foundation and intellectual stimulation necessary for university-level study and professional success.

The Year 12 curriculum establishes fundamental principles across four core modules: biological molecules, cell structure and function, organisms and their interaction with the environment, and genetic variation. This foundation prepares students for the more advanced topics in Year 13, where they explore organism responses to environmental change, energy transfer systems, and population dynamics within ecological contexts. The integrated approach allows students to make meaningful connections between topics and understand how individual concepts contribute to broader biological principles.

Our commitment to practical learning is paramount. Students engage in regular laboratory work and fieldwork, developing essential hands-on skills that complement theoretical understanding. Recent fieldwork experiences have proven invaluable in helping students consolidate learning in authentic environments whilst developing teamwork and communication skills highly valued by universities. This blend of classroom teaching, practical investigation, and field experience ensures students leave with comprehensive biological knowledge and the practical competencies demanded by leading universities and professional bodies.

Year 12

Organisms and the Exchange of Substances with the Environment

Study how organisms interact with their environment and exchange vital substances. Examine gas exchange, transport systems, and osmoregulation.

Genetic Information; Variation and Relationships Between Organisms
Year 12

Genetic Information; Variation and Relationships Between Organisms

Delve into DNA, genes, protein synthesis, and the mechanisms of heredity. Understand how genetic variation drives evolution and biodiversity.

Responding to Change; How Organisms Respond to Changes in External and Internal Environment
Year 13

Responding to Change; How Organisms Respond to Changes in External and Internal Environment

Examine how organisms detect and respond to environmental stimuli through nervous and endocrine systems, maintaining homeostasis and adapting to change.

Energy Transfers
Year 13

Energy Transfers

Investigate how energy flows through biological systems via photosynthesis and respiration. Understand energy efficiency, ecological pyramids, and nutrient cycling.

Genetics; Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems
Year 13

Genetics; Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems

Explore how populations evolve through natural selection, genetic drift, and adaptation. Study ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, and conservation.

Assessment Structure and Examination Details

Assessment for A Level Biology is rigorous and comprehensive, designed to evaluate students' subject knowledge, analytical skills, and understanding of scientific methodology. The examination board, AQA, has developed a three-paper structure that assesses content across Years 12 and 13, ensuring thorough coverage of the curriculum and allowing students to demonstrate their learning in diverse formats.

Each examination paper serves a distinct purpose: Paper 1 focuses on Year 12 content with short and extended responses; Paper 2 covers Year 13 material with comprehension-based questioning; and Paper 3 integrates knowledge across the entire course, incorporating practical techniques, data analysis, and essay writing. This multi-faceted approach ensures that students develop not only factual knowledge but also the ability to analyse, synthesise, and communicate scientific understanding at the highest level.

Throughout the course, students complete practical activities that contribute to their understanding of experimental methodology and scientific reasoning, which are explicitly assessed within the examination papers. Practical work is integral to our teaching approach, helping students bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Paper Duration Marks Percentage Content Focus Structure
Paper 1 2 hours 91 35% Year 12 programme including practical skills 76 marks: short and long answers; 15 marks: extended response
Paper 2 2 hours 91 35% Year 13 programme including practical skills 76 marks: short and long answers; 15 marks: comprehension
Paper 3 2 hours 78 30% Any content 38 marks: structured questions on practical techniques; 15 marks: critical analysis of experimental data; 25 marks: essay (choice of two)
