Introduction to A Level Chemistry

A Level Chemistry at Sandy Secondary School provides a rigorous and fascinating exploration of the molecular world, building on GCSE foundations to develop a deep understanding of chemical principles and their real-world applications. Examined by AQA (Specification: A Level 7405), this two-year programme covers the three pillars of chemistry: Physical, Inorganic, and Organic Chemistry.

In Year 12, students establish a strong foundation across all three branches. Physical Chemistry introduces atomic structure, bonding, kinetics, equilibria, and quantitative chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry covers periodicity and the chemistry of Group 2 and Group 7 elements. Organic Chemistry explores hydrocarbon chemistry and organic analysis techniques.

Year 13 builds on this foundation with more advanced topics. Physical Chemistry extends to thermodynamics, acids and bases, rates of reaction, and electrochemical processes. Inorganic Chemistry examines period 3 elements, transition metals, and the reactions of ions. Organic Chemistry progresses to polymerisation, isomerism, aromatic chemistry, aldehydes and ketones, and organic synthesis and analysis.

Careers and University Destinations

Although not always necessary, the majority of careers in Chemistry require further education to degree or masters level. A Level Chemistry opens doors to a wide range of rewarding and impactful career pathways including Analytical Chemist, Chemical Engineer, Clinical Biochemist, Pharmacologist, Science Writer, and Toxicologist.

Most students studying Chemistry at Sandy Secondary School go on to complete degrees in Biosciences at leading universities. Recent destinations include Sheffield University for Biomedical Science, University of Bath for Biochemistry, and University of Hull for Ecology. The strong analytical and practical skills developed through this course are highly valued by universities and employers across the sciences.

I enjoy practicals as they are a really good challenge.

It's really interesting to take the GCSE knowledge further and find out the truth about Chemistry.
