A Level Dance at Sandy Secondary School is a dynamic and inspiring programme that develops students as performers, choreographers, and critical thinkers. Examined by AQA, this course combines practical performance and choreography with in-depth academic study of dance as an art form, preparing students for prestigious dance schools and university programmes.
The Performance and Choreography component challenges students to develop their technical and expressive abilities through solo performance linked to a specific practitioner, performance in a quartet, and group choreography. Students refine their artistry while learning to communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives through movement.
The Critical Engagement component deepens students' understanding of dance through the study of two set works. Students analyse Rooster by Christopher Bruce, exploring its context within the Rambert Dance Company, and Singin' in the Rain by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, examining its place within American Jazz Dance. This academic study develops analytical writing skills and a rich appreciation of dance history and practice.
