Introduction to A Level Drama & Theatre Studies

A Level Drama & Theatre Studies at Sandy Secondary School continues to be a popular subject where students excel. Examined by Edexcel, this course develops skills as practitioners and performers while building powerful cross-curricular links in textual analysis that empower students to succeed across their studies, from understanding politics and social structure to deepening their appreciation of English literature.

The course comprises three components that balance practical performance with academic study. In Component 1: Devising, students create an original performance piece using a key extract from a performance text and a theatre practitioner as stimuli, with performer or designer routes available. Component 2: Text in Performance involves a group performance of one key extract and a monologue or duologue from a different text. Component 3: Theatre Makers in Practice is a written examination exploring live theatre evaluation, practical exploration of performance texts, and interpretation in light of chosen theatre practitioners.

Drama develops well-rounded and creative students — a quality sought by many top universities in the country. Many of our students go on to study BA (Hons) courses in Acting, Drama & Theatre Studies, or Performing Arts, with several accepted into prestigious drama schools such as the Central School of Speech and Drama. Others have pursued university degrees in vocations ranging from Midwifery to Natural Sciences, with some progressing to Masters Degrees and Doctorates.

Drama is the place where I can explore spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues and plays as a drama practitioner. Not only does it develop my understanding as a performer through the practical exploration of plays, it is the one place where I can be anyone I want to be. Whether you have desire to work within the performing arts industry one day, or whether you just love drama and practical work, it has something for everyone.
