Introduction to A Level English Literature

A Level English Literature at Sandy Secondary School is a rich and rewarding programme that deepens students' engagement with great works of poetry, prose, and drama across the centuries. Examined by AQA (Specification A, Option 2B), this two-year course develops sophisticated critical reading, analytical writing, and independent thinking skills that are highly valued by universities and employers alike.

The course is structured around three core areas: Love through the Ages, Texts in Shared Contexts, and an Independent Critical Study. Students explore how writers across different periods have represented love in poetry, prose, and drama, including the study of Shakespeare. The Texts in Shared Contexts component focuses on Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day, examining comparative texts such as A Streetcar Named Desire and The Help, alongside Carol Ann Duffy's poetry anthology Feminine Gospels.

Students need a minimum of a Grade 6 at GCSE to study English Literature in the Sixth Form. The first year establishes a skills-based foundation aligned with examination requirements, building the critical confidence needed for the more independent study in Year 13, including the extended essay component of the Non-Examined Assessment.
