Introduction to A Level Sociology

A Level Sociology at Sandy Secondary School helps students understand the world they live in through the study of society, institutions, and human behaviour. Examined by AQA (7192), this course develops critical essay writing skills, research understanding, and the ability to engage with debates and controversial points of view.

In Year 12, students study three topics: Education, examining the role and purpose of schooling, patterns in achievement, and policies affecting the experience of schooling; Research Methods and Methods in Context, exploring how sociologists collect data and the strengths and limitations of different approaches; and Families and Households, looking at demography, family diversity, childhood, and the roles family members take on within the home.

Year 13 covers Crime and Deviance, exploring explanations for crime, punishment, control, and new crimes such as state crimes and green crimes; Beliefs in Society, examining patterns of belief through traditional religion, cults, New Age movements, and science across the globe; and Theories and Debates, addressing empirical and theoretical questions about the influence of sociology on society.
