Introduction to Applied Science

The AAQ Applied Science Level 3 Extended Certificate at Sandy Secondary School is a practical, hands-on science qualification equivalent to one A Level. Examined by Pearson, this course combines rigorous theoretical study with applied laboratory work, developing the skills needed for science-based careers and degree courses.

The course includes a compulsory exam unit covering Key Concepts in Science — core concepts of Biology (cell structure, homeostasis), Chemistry (atomic structure, bonding), and Physics (electricity, dynamics). Two compulsory coursework units cover Applied Experimental Techniques, where learners carry out and report on six mandatory practicals across biological, chemical, and physical techniques, and The Human Body, an in-depth study of human anatomy and physiology including the digestive, musculo-skeletal, and nervous systems.

Students also choose one optional unit from Science Investigation Skills or Contemporary Issues in Science. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses.

Careers and Progression

The Applied Science qualification opens doors to a wide range of science-based degree courses and careers. The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills provides an excellent foundation for further study in the sciences.

Students can progress to degree courses in engineering, sport psychology, nursing, sport and exercise science, environmental science, laboratory science, chemistry, and biology. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many courses.
