Introduction to Our C&L Provision

At Sandy Secondary School, our Communication and Language (C&L) Provision is designed to support students in developing confident, resilient communication skills within a supportive and nurturing environment. We recognise that effective communication is fundamental to learning, social interaction, and future success, and our provision is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students.

Our approach is grounded in best practice and evidence-based interventions. We understand that students learn at different rates and in different ways, and our dedicated team works collaboratively to ensure that every learner has access to high-quality, responsive support. Whether students require intensive small-group work or whole-class strategies embedded within quality teaching, we are committed to building their confidence and enabling them to communicate effectively across all contexts.

Our C&L Provision sits at the heart of our curriculum delivery, complementing the work of class teachers and subject specialists. We believe that strong communication skills unlock academic potential, enhance wellbeing, and prepare our young people for independent life and future employment.

Key Features and Curriculum Strengths

Adaptive and Responsive Teaching

Our lessons are highly adapted to meet individual student needs, with regular opportunities for retrieval practice, reasoning, and problem-solving integrated throughout.

Collaborative Professional Practice

Teachers work together through collaborative planning and regular assessment cycles, ensuring consistency and sharing of best practice across the provision.

Regular Assessment and Intervention

Continuous low-stakes and summative assessment helps us identify learning gaps quickly and implement responsive interventions to keep students progressing.

Community Engagement and Access

We implement regular local access trips and real-world learning opportunities to support academic progress and strengthen community connections.

Curriculum Structure, Implementation, and Impact

Our C&L curriculum is well-sequenced and ambitious, progressively building knowledge and skills across Key Stages 3 and 4. We deliver a carefully adapted version of the national curriculum that is responsive to the individual needs of our students, ensuring all learners can access learning and achieve meaningful qualifications including GCSEs, Functional Skills in Maths and English, and ASDAN awards.

High-quality teaching is at the heart of our implementation. Our educators use explicit modelling through carefully selected example pairs, checking for understanding throughout each lesson in a bespoke learning environment tailored to student needs. Regular assessments help consolidate knowledge and identify areas where reteaching and targeted intervention will have the greatest impact. The scheme of learning provides flexible, supportive structures with additional support scaffolds and depth challenges built in, enabling all students to access the curriculum with confidence while still being appropriately challenged.

By the end of our provision, we aim for students to have developed fluent knowledge, skills, and understanding across numeracy, literacy, and core life skills. They leave with the ability to comprehend, interpret, and communicate information in a variety of forms appropriate to different contexts. Most importantly, our students are equipped with the confidence and capabilities needed for further education and employment, with our team actively supporting them to secure placements for the next stage of their journey.
