Computing & IT

The Computing & ICT curriculum is designed to develop students’ digital literacy, computational thinking, and technical skills across all key stages. It aims to equip students with the confidence and ability to use ICT effectively and safely while introducing them to programming concepts and problem-solving techniques from an early stage.

Through structured learning, students gain a deep understanding of computer systems, networks, and digital media, enabling them to design, create, and evaluate digital solutions for real-world problems. The curriculum also ensures that students are well-prepared for further education and careers in computing, ICT, and related fields.

Our Approach to Computing & IT

Our Computing & IT department focuses on three key areas that shape everything we do, from programming fundamentals to real-world digital solutions.

Digital Literacy

Building confidence and capability in using ICT effectively and safely across all key stages, from foundational skills to advanced applications.

Computational Thinking

Developing programming skills, problem-solving techniques, and logical reasoning through Computer Science, iMedia, and IT pathways.

Systems & Networks

Understanding computer architecture, binary representation, networking, cybersecurity, and how digital systems underpin modern life.

Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Our Computing & IT curriculum is built around three core pillars. Expand the sections below to read our full statements on what we aim to achieve, how we deliver it, and the difference it makes to our students.

  • The Computing & ICT curriculum is designed to develop students’ digital literacy, computational thinking, and technical skills across all key stages.
  • It aims to equip students with the confidence and ability to use ICT effectively and safely while introducing them to programming concepts and problem-solving techniques from an early stage.
  • Through structured learning, students will gain a deep understanding of computer systems, networks, and digital media, enabling them to design, create, and evaluate digital solutions for real-world problems.
  • The curriculum also ensures that students are well-prepared for further education and careers in computing, ICT, and related fields.
  • The curriculum is structured progressively, beginning with foundational knowledge in Key Stage 3, advancing through specialised study areas in Key Stage 4, and culminating in advanced learning at Key Stage 5.
  • In Years 7 and 8, students focus on digital literacy, safe ICT use, programming fundamentals, and an introduction to binary and computer systems.
  • At Key Stage 4, students deepen their understanding through pathways in Computer Science, ICT, and Creative iMedia. Computer Science emphasises problem-solving, programming, system components, and computational thinking. The Vocational Award in ICT develops practical skills in databases, spreadsheets, and document automation, while Creative iMedia fosters the ability to design, create, and evaluate digital media products.
  • At Key Stage 5, A-Level Computer Science builds on prior learning with a focus on programming, data structures, computational theory, and system analysis. The BTEC National Diploma in IT expands into areas such as cybersecurity, forensic management, and digital technologies in business applications. The Creative Digital Media Production course develops students’ ability to analyse media representation, design digital games, and engage in industry-related project work.
  • By the end of their studies, students will have a strong foundation in programming, computational thinking, and ICT applications, enabling them to work confidently across multiple digital platforms.
  • They will be proficient in using various programming languages and will have developed the skills to design and implement digital solutions for complex problems.
  • Their understanding of computer systems, including binary representation, networking, and system components, will allow them to analyse, design, and develop digital media and computing solutions that meet industry and real-world demands.
  • Graduates of the curriculum will be well-equipped for higher education and careers in computing, IT, and digital media, possessing both the technical expertise and problem-solving skills necessary for success in these fields.
