Comprehensive Curriculum Overview: Nurturing Holistic Growth

At Sandy Secondary School, we believe that education extends far beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Our curriculum is purposefully designed to develop well-rounded individuals who embody our core values: aspiration, self-motivation, competitiveness, compassion, resilience, trustworthiness and honour. We encourage our students to be courteous, positive and driven, whilst developing the confidence, skills and attitudes necessary for economic wellbeing and active citizenship.

Our curriculum ensures that all students achieve the highest possible standard of attainment by providing access to a full range of subjects within a broad and balanced framework. We emphasise the importance of British Values and develop in our students a strong understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Through our carefully sequenced learning, students develop moral awareness, cultural understanding and an appreciation of diversity. We recognise that literacy, numeracy and digital competence are essential foundations for success across all disciplines and in adult life. Our approach equips students with transferable skills, relevant knowledge and the resilience to navigate an ever-changing world. The promotion of wellbeing sits at the heart of our provision, ensuring that students feel safe, supported and empowered to achieve their full potential.

  • We inspire our students to set ambitious goals and pursue them with determination. Self-motivation is cultivated through meaningful learning experiences that connect to students' interests and future aspirations, helping them take ownership of their educational journey.
  • We foster a culture of healthy competition where students challenge themselves to achieve excellence. This drive is channelled constructively through rigorous target-setting and celebrating success across academic and co-curricular pursuits.
  • Respect, kindness and empathy form the foundation of our school community. Students develop compassion for others and understand the importance of making positive contributions to society through acts of service and consideration.
  • We build in our students the capacity to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a positive outlook. Resilience is developed through pastoral support, challenge and the modelling of growth mindset principles across all learning contexts.
  • Integrity and honesty are non-negotiable. We create an environment where students can be trusted to act with integrity, maintain their word, and develop a strong moral compass that guides their decision-making throughout life.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum: Building Strong Foundations

In Years 7 and 8, our primary aim is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to thrive as they progress through secondary education and into adult life. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is intentionally broad and balanced, ensuring that all students study the full range of subjects. This inclusive approach allows every student to discover their passions and develop a comprehensive understanding of different disciplines and where they may lead.

The curriculum comprises English, Mathematics, Science, at least one Modern Foreign Language, Geography, History, Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, Art, Dance, Design Technology, Drama, ICT and Computing, Music and Physical Education. Our Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural programme is woven through form time and enhanced by specially planned drop-down days that address year-group specific topics. By instilling our students with the best of what has been thought, said and done in each subject, we hope to enable them to appreciate and participate in the full richness of the human experience. Subject specialism is at the heart of our approach, and you will see meaningful differences in the way that curriculum content is constructed and assessed across different disciplines. Students receive feedback on their progress three times per year, and during Key Stage 3, we assess students' attitude to learning on a scale of Excellent, Good, Satisfactory or Poor, providing support to help students continuously improve.

Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5: Specialisation and Progression

Key Stage 4 (Years 9–11)

Students study a core curriculum comprising English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (available as Double or Triple Award), Humanities (Geography or History), Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish) and Core PE. In addition, students select four subjects from a broad range of options including GCSEs and BTECs. This flexibility allows students to specialise in areas aligned with their career aspirations whilst maintaining a well-rounded education. All students are set challenging, achievable target grades based on prior attainment, with the aim of achieving progress above the national average. Subject availability is reviewed annually to meet evolving student needs and emerging courses.

Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)

Students progress to Level 3 courses based on their achievement at Key Stage 4. Entry typically requires at least six subjects at grade 4 (or equivalent), including English. Students not achieving grade 4 in Mathematics continue their studies—those with grade 3 pursue GCSE, whilst those below grade 3 begin with Functional Skills and progress to GCSE. The number of courses studied is determined by students' grades and is agreed upon in discussion with the individual learner. Using ALPS analysis, we set aspirational yet achievable targets that reflect the top 25% of student performance.

Implementation and Support

Each subject area has a detailed curriculum map and scheme of work that sequences learning coherently. Our 50 hours of teaching time delivered across a two-week timetable ensures comprehensive curriculum delivery. We teach students how to think critically, to evaluate evidence, and to be active rather than passive recipients of information. Subject specialism is paramount, with each discipline offering its own distinct assessment approach. Regular feedback and target-setting help all students maximise their potential, with pastoral support ensuring that academic progress is accompanied by personal wellbeing and resilience development.

Curriculum Impact and Next Steps

Our curriculum delivery has measurable and meaningful impact across all key stages. At Key Stage 3, we prioritise developing students' love of learning and assess their attitude to learning as a key indicator of engagement. Where students receive feedback indicating areas for development, our pastoral team works collaboratively to provide targeted support, ensuring continuous improvement in both attitude and attainment.

At Key Stage 4, our focus is on enabling every student to maximise their potential. All students are equally valued, and we are committed to supporting each to achieve as well as possible within a culture of high expectations. At Key Stage 5, students pursuing Level 3 courses are on a trajectory towards achieving in the top 25% nationally, with targets set using contextual data and progression modelling.
