Literacy at the Heart of Learning

At our school, literacy is at the heart of learning across the curriculum. Strong reading, writing and communication skills are essential for success in every subject, enabling students to access knowledge, think critically and express their ideas with confidence.

To ensure all students are supported in developing these vital skills, we assess reading ages twice each year to monitor progress and identify those who may need additional support. Students requiring further development benefit from targeted reading fluency interventions, designed to build accuracy, confidence and comprehension. By embedding literacy into every lesson and providing timely, personalised support, we are committed to ensuring that every student can thrive academically and develop the skills needed for lifelong learning.

The Literacy 3

This year, we have worked to embed The Literacy 3 within our teaching and learning model across the school. These three key strands provide a consistent framework for strengthening literacy in every classroom, supporting students in developing greater confidence and independence in their reading, writing and spoken communication.

Developing Reading Fluency

Building accuracy, automaticity and expression through structured reading practice, enabling students to focus on understanding rather than decoding individual words.

I Do, We Do, You Do

A scaffolded approach where teachers explicitly model high-quality language and thinking, then guide collaborative practice before students work independently with confidence.

Say It Again Better

Creating regular opportunities for students to refine and articulate their thinking, developing higher-quality spoken and written communication across all subjects.

Herts For Learning Reading Fluency

The Herts For Learning Reading Fluency Programme is designed to help students become more confident, accurate and expressive readers through structured, supportive practice. We have worked alongside Herts For Learning to train staff to deliver their Reading Fluency framework and have been very pleased with the positive impact this has already had with Year 7 and Year 8 students. As a result of this success, we are continuing to roll the programme out more widely across the school.

Reading fluency is an essential skill because it enables students to read smoothly and automatically, allowing them to focus more fully on understanding and analysing what they are reading rather than decoding individual words. At secondary school, strong reading fluency supports learning across all subjects by improving comprehension, vocabulary development, and students' ability to access increasingly complex texts and examination questions.

As students become more fluent readers, they are often better able to retain information, interpret meaning, and respond thoughtfully in lessons and assessments. Developing these skills can have a significant positive impact on academic confidence and achievement, including improved performance and outcomes at GCSE level across a wide range of subjects.
