Mathematics

Our Mathematics department aims to develop confident, resilient, and numerate students who can think critically and solve problems both in mathematics and in real-world contexts. We build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, nurturing curiosity and a growth mindset.

We deliver a well-sequenced, ambitious curriculum that progressively builds knowledge and skills across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. Lessons are designed to promote mastery, with regular opportunities for retrieval, reasoning, and problem-solving, ensuring all students are well-prepared for further education and employment.

Mathematics Curriculum Roadmap

Our Approach to Mathematics

Our Mathematics department focuses on three key areas that shape everything we do.

Numerical Fluency

Building fluent knowledge of mathematical methods and concepts through structured practice, retrieval activities, and the UK Maths Challenges.

Problem Solving

Developing critical thinking and reasoning skills to solve problems, make deductions, draw conclusions, and apply mathematics to real-world contexts.

Progression & Mastery

Tracking progress through regular assessment with targeted interventions, ensuring every student achieves their best possible outcomes.

Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Our Mathematics curriculum is built around three core pillars. Expand the sections below to read our full statements on what we aim to achieve, how we deliver it, and the difference it makes to our students.

  • Our intent is to develop confident, resilient, and numerate students who can think critically and solve problems both in mathematics and in real-world contexts.
  • We aim to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, nurturing curiosity and a growth mindset, while ensuring all students are well-prepared for further education and employment.
  • We deliver a well-sequenced, ambitious curriculum that progressively builds knowledge and skills across Key Stages 3 and 4, aligned with the national curriculum and GCSE specifications.
  • KS5 follow the Pearson Edexcel A-Level specification.
  • Lessons are designed to promote mastery, with regular opportunities for retrieval, reasoning, and problem-solving.
  • High-quality teaching is supported through collaborative planning, regular assessment, and responsive interventions.
  • Teachers will use explicit modelling through example pairs and check for student understanding of key skills throughout their lesson.
  • Assessments are conducted termly and help students consolidate their knowledge with an opportunity to close the gap on areas of weakness through targeted sessions delivered by topic experts.
  • We stretch high-attaining students through challenging tasks and enrichment including through the UK Maths Challenges.
  • Across all year groups students are set by ability and follow one core strand through the scheme of work until the summer term of year 10.
  • The scheme of learning provides a differentiated structure so all levels of ability can access the curriculum, with additional building blocks and depth challenges built in to support and challenge the students.
  • This provides stretch for students of different abilities preparing them to then peruse either higher or foundation at GCSE while, also preparing and supporting learners and building their confidence.
  • Progress is tracked through low stakes assessment and summative assessment.
  • Staff use the data to inform their planning and implementation of the curriculum to ensure the best outcomes for all students.
  • By the end of our curriculum, students will have developed fluent knowledge, skills, and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts; acquired, selected, and applied mathematical techniques to solve problems; reasoned mathematically, made deductions and inferences, and drawn conclusions.
  • They will have mastered how to comprehend, interpret, and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
  • Students leave our department with confidence in using mathematics in everyday life and across other subjects.
  • Our pupils are equipped not only for academic success, including further study at A-Level and beyond, but also with the analytical skills necessary for a rapidly changing world.
