Personal Development

At Sandy Secondary School we want to equip our young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes to be happy, healthy and safe when navigating the world around them. We create a culture which promotes mutual respect, understanding of social inequalities, and tolerance of different beliefs.

Personal Development is delivered through three interconnected programmes: the Form Time Curriculum, Personal Development Drop Down Days, and the Assembly Schedule, ensuring all students develop as confident, informed citizens prepared for life beyond school.

Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Our Personal Development curriculum is built around three core pillars. Expand the sections below to read our full statements on what we aim to achieve, how we deliver it, and the difference it makes to our students.

  • At Sandy Secondary School we want to equip our young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes to be happy, healthy and safe when navigating the world around them.
  • We wish to create a culture which promotes mutual respect and understanding of social inequalities, and tolerance of different beliefs.
  • We wish to enable our young people to confidently tackle the personal issues and public challenges they face, empowering them to flourish as the future generation.
  • We achieve this by exploring the digital and physical world, the political and legal landscape of the UK, religious and non-religious world views, students’ personal health development, and guidance relating to personal risk, to give students an insight into their world.
  • Personal Development is delivered through three interconnected programme across all year groups at Sandy Secondary School.
  • These are: Form Time Curriculum – Year 7 to 10 have mixed forms, and they learn six schemes of work throughout the year, one for each half term.
  • The themes for each half term repeat every year with the specific content changing.
  • This runs on a 4 year cycle, with all students having learned the same content by the time they leave Year 10 into Year 11.
  • Year 11 students complete their own 1 year curriculum; and Year 12 and 13 complete a two year curriculum in Sixth Form.
  • Personal Development Drop Down Days – all year groups have 3 PD Days throughout the year where they come off of their normal timetable and complete lessons and activities relating to Personal Development.
  • Assembly Schedule – all students receive a weekly assembly related to our school values, national/international events, and other celebrations.
  • These are linked to what is delivered in the Form Time curriculum.
  • By the end of their time with us at Sandy Secondary School, students will have developed a range of skills and knowledge that will take them through all of life’s challenges.
  • They will be active and considerate citizens who have the characteristics needed to navigate through the various paths they may follow in the future.
  • Our students will have embedded the core school values, British Values and an understanding of how they can successful take up their place in the world.
  • They will be able to approach a range of real-life situations and apply the skills they’ve gained to manage these effectively.
  • Our students will be the future leaders of our communities, with self-respect and respect for others and their environment.
