Pupil Premium at Sandy Secondary School

In April 2010, the Government introduced the Pupil Premium, a transformative funding initiative designed to address the significant underlying inequalities that existed between children eligible for Free School Meals and their more affluent peers. This additional funding represents a substantial financial commitment, provided on top of the standard funding a school receives through its regular budget allocation. The Pupil Premium is strategically targeted at reducing the progress gap between students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those from less deprived families, ensuring that every student, regardless of socioeconomic circumstances, can benefit from the same high-quality educational opportunities and support systems.

At Sandy Secondary School, we recognise the profound impact that economic disadvantage can have on a student’s educational journey and life prospects. The Pupil Premium funding we receive is allocated specifically to support students from low-income families who were known to be eligible for Free School Meals over the last six years, as well as Services Children whose parents work in the Armed Forces, and children who have been in Local Authority Care continuously for more than six months. These groups of students often face additional barriers to learning and require targeted interventions to help them thrive academically and personally.

How We Use Pupil Premium

At Sandy Secondary School, we utilise Pupil Premium funding strategically and purposefully to support our most vulnerable students across three key areas.

Raising Attainment

Targeted interventions and support in key subject areas to close the attainment gap and ensure disadvantaged students achieve strong academic outcomes alongside their peers.

Increasing Aspirations

Exposing students to diverse career pathways, enrichment opportunities, and experiences that broaden horizons and raise expectations for the future.

Promoting Engagement

Meaningful participation in school life through enrichment activities, personalised support, and pastoral care that helps every student feel valued and connected.

Accountability & Impact

The accountability for Pupil Premium spending is rigorous and carefully monitored. Schools are held accountable for demonstrating the tangible impact of the money spent on reducing the attainment and progress gap between Pupil Premium students and their Non-Pupil Premium peers. This means we must evidence how our investments have improved outcomes, whether through improved examination results, enhanced progress measures, or increased engagement in school life.

We pride ourselves on our caring and inclusive ethos, which permeates everything we do. We are firmly committed to the belief that all students can reach their full potential with the right support, high expectations, and dedicated staff who understand their individual needs. By investing Pupil Premium funding thoughtfully, we are working to ensure that no student is left behind and that every young person in our care has the foundation to succeed.
