Science

Our Science department aims to foster curious, critical, and scientifically literate students who can evaluate evidence, make informed decisions, and solve real-world problems. We build a deep, interconnected understanding of scientific concepts, nurturing a lifelong love of discovery and a growth mindset across all branches of science.

We deliver a well-sequenced, ambitious curriculum following the AQA framework across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. At Key Stage 4, students can follow either the Combined Science or the Triple Science pathway. At Key Stage 5 we offer A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, alongside Applied Science, catering to a broad range of student ambitions.

Our Approach to Science

Our Science department focuses on three key areas that shape everything we do.

Practical Science

Core practical skills are embedded across biology, chemistry and physics, so students learn to plan, measure, analyse and draw conclusions with confidence.

Scientific Literacy

Scientific vocabulary and reasoning are taught explicitly, and regular retrieval ensures knowledge is retained and applied to unfamiliar contexts.

STEM Pathways & Careers

Rich extracurricular opportunities and a strong focus on scientific careers prepare students for higher education, STEM pathways and the modern workforce.

Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact

Our Science curriculum is built around three core pillars. Expand the sections below to read our full statements on what we aim to achieve, how we deliver it, and the difference it makes to our students.

  • Our intent is to foster curious, critical, and scientifically literate students who can evaluate evidence, make informed decisions, and solve real-world problems.
  • We build a deep, interconnected understanding of scientific concepts, so that ideas met in one discipline support and strengthen learning across the others.
  • We nurture a lifelong love of discovery and a growth mindset across all branches of science.
  • We aim for every student to leave us well prepared for higher education, STEM pathways, and the modern workforce.
  • We deliver a well-sequenced, ambitious curriculum following the AQA framework across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.
  • At Key Stage 4, students follow either the Combined Science or the Triple Science pathway.
  • At Key Stage 5, students can study A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, or a Level 3 Applied Science qualification, catering to a broad range of student ambitions.
  • Lessons are designed to embed core practical skills and scientific literacy, with regular retrieval built in so that knowledge is retained and applied confidently.
  • Classroom learning is extended through rich extracurricular opportunities and a strong focus on scientific careers.
  • Students retain and apply scientific knowledge confidently, drawing on secure practical skills and a well-developed scientific vocabulary.
  • They are able to evaluate evidence, weigh competing claims, and make informed decisions about the world around them.
  • Students are well prepared for the next stage of their education, whether that is Combined or Triple Science at GCSE, A Level study, or a Level 3 applied pathway.
  • They leave our department equipped for higher education, STEM careers, and the modern workforce, with a lasting curiosity about how the world works.
