Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

At Sandy Secondary School, we recognise that high-quality teaching and learning is central to empowering our students to achieve their full potential and develop into well-rounded individuals prepared for future success. We are committed to fostering an educational environment where every young person can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our approach is guided by the principle that students learn best when they are supported to gradually acquire, consolidate, and apply knowledge, concepts, skills, and attitudes that help them make sense of the world around them. We understand that learning is not a one-size-fits-all process; rather, it is a deeply personal journey that varies from student to student. We believe in creating an inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued, heard, and challenged appropriately, regardless of their starting point or background.

Teaching and learning across our school is informed by robust evidence-based practice, ensuring that every lesson contributes meaningfully to the development of confident, capable, and resilient learners. Our staff continuously evaluate and refine their pedagogical methods, drawing on the latest educational research, cognitive science, and best practice from leading institutions.

Our Pedagogical Framework

Our goals and objectives are embedded into a structured pedagogical framework, ensuring consistency and excellence across every classroom.

The Sandy Six

Ensure students have the best possible education to give them better life chances. All lessons use the Sandy Six to provide high-quality, well-structured teaching.

Shared Professional Language

Ensure staff have a shared language for teaching and learning. We use WalkThroughs by Tom Sherrington to inform and refine our classroom practice.

The Five E's Structure

Have a consistent approach to lesson planning. The 5Es planning structure scaffolds lessons and helps aid student memory and understanding.

Retrieval Practice

Use retrieval to support student memory and understanding. All lessons begin with retrieval in the Engage stage to reinforce prior learning.

Rosenshine's Principles

Use Rosenshine's Principles in Action to ensure knowledge is logically sequenced, providing a clear guide to teachers that supports effective student learning.

Frameworks in Detail

We invest significantly in professional development, enabling our teachers to stay at the forefront of educational innovation whilst maintaining their enthusiasm for their subject areas. By combining expert subject knowledge with innovative teaching strategies, we foster deep understanding rather than superficial learning.

Our lessons encourage students to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and explore concepts from multiple perspectives. We integrate practical activities, collaborative learning experiences, and real-world applications to ensure knowledge becomes meaningful and memorable.

This unwavering commitment to excellence enables our students to not only succeed academically and achieve strong examination results, but also to develop the critical thinking skills, creativity, independence, and resilience they will need throughout their lives. We prepare them to be thoughtful citizens, capable of adapting to an ever-changing world and making positive contributions to their communities.

  • The Sandy Six represents the core pedagogical principles that underpin teaching at Sandy Secondary School. These six principles have been carefully selected to ensure that all lessons are well-planned, structured, and purposeful.

Our lessons are designed to be inclusive, meeting the needs of all learners, and are structured to promote knowledge retention, understanding, and application. Teachers use the Sandy Six to maintain consistently high standards of lesson design and delivery across all subjects.

  • To ensure a coherent, evidence-based approach across the Greensand Federation, both Sandy Secondary School and Moggerhanger Primary School integrate the Knowledge Thread into their practice. This approach draws upon Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction, which are grounded in cognitive science and effective classroom practice.

These principles emphasise breaking down complex content into manageable steps, scaffolded instruction that supports learners as they develop mastery, and active engagement with opportunities for students to practise and consolidate knowledge. We follow the categorisation set out in Tom Sherrington's Rosenshine's Principles in Action, and we are proud to be a WalkThru's school, making use of Sherrington's five-step instructional guides to inform and refine classroom practice.

  • At the Greensand Federation, we recognise the value of instructional coaching in improving pedagogy and supporting teachers to deliver high-quality lessons. Our Continuing Professional Development framework is underpinned by coaching conversations, ensuring that professional growth is both reflective and practical.

We believe that effective CPD is a cornerstone of educational improvement. Our CPD programmes are designed to be directly relevant to classroom practice, research-informed and measurable in impact, and focused on improving student outcomes. In Spring 2025, we are implementing a federation-wide coaching pilot to further enhance the quality of teaching and learning across all schools.

  • At both Sandy Secondary School and Moggerhanger Primary School, we use the Five E's Lesson Structure to support effective teaching and learning. This model provides a clear sequence to help pupils build understanding progressively through experience and new concepts.

The five stages are: Engage (capturing interest and activating prior knowledge), Explore (enabling learners to investigate new ideas and concepts), Explain (providing structured instruction and clarifying understanding), Elaborate (extending knowledge and applying it to different contexts), and Evaluate (assessing understanding and identifying next steps). All lessons begin with an Engage stage focused on knowledge retrieval, which reinforces prior learning and prepares pupils for new material.
