At Sandy Secondary School, we are committed to making sure every student stretches themselves both academically and personally. We have developed a programme of additional support and enrichment for those with particularly high academic ability, to ensure they achieve their full potential.

The Top Achievers Programme aims to enhance the curriculum experience, encouraging our highest achieving students to expand their horizons and embrace higher aspirations and ambitions. It provides the skills and support to enable them to become more self-aware, self-motivated and positive about their academic potential, whilst helping them to become more resilient and driven when faced with barriers.

Through academic and personal coaching, mentoring and self-reflection, we want our top achieving students to realise their full potential and Empowering Our Students To Shine.

What the Programme Offers

Academic Coaching & Mentoring

Personalised coaching and mentoring sessions help students develop self-awareness, motivation and a positive attitude towards their academic potential, building resilience and drive.

Monthly Masterclasses

Professionals from industry, services and academia deliver monthly masterclasses, expanding understanding of future opportunities and providing inspiration for career planning.

Russell Group University Links

Direct connections with Russell Group universities allow students to experience academia first-hand, encouraging those from areas of low participation to consider further education.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Developing the analytical and logical skills needed to achieve at the highest levels within school at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, and in further education beyond.

Cultural Capital & Enrichment

Broadening the curriculum to increase cultural capital, giving students access to a wide range of opportunities, ideas and experiences that enrich their educational journey.

Personal Development & Resilience

Building confidence and ambition through diverse opportunities to work alongside different people and in varied situations, empowering students to grow beyond their comfort zones.

The Top Achievers Programme goes beyond the classroom to broaden the curriculum and increase the cultural capital of our students. Through a carefully designed programme of enrichment activities, masterclasses and university partnerships, we open doors to opportunities that inspire ambition and inform future planning.

Monthly masterclasses delivered by professionals from across industry, public services and academia provide real-world insight into career pathways and the skills employers value. These sessions encourage students to think broadly about their futures and consider routes they might not otherwise have explored, from medicine and engineering to law and the creative industries.

Our established links with Russell Group universities are a cornerstone of the programme. Students have the opportunity to visit leading universities, attend taster lectures and workshops, and gain a genuine understanding of what higher education involves. These experiences are particularly valuable for students from areas with historically low participation in university education, helping to demystify the application process and build the confidence needed to aim high.
